Getting Started with Print Remote
Connect a printer to one Windows PC or Mac and use it from your phone, tablet, or another computer on the same local network. The printer itself does not need
1. Set Up the Printer and Apps
- Connect the printer to your Windows PC or Mac, install any required driver, and check that you can print from that computer.
- Install Print Remote on that computer and on the phone, tablet, or other computer you want to print from.
- Connect both devices to the same local network. Your phone can use
Wi-Fi while the receiving computer usesWi-Fi or Ethernet connected to the same router. - Open Print Remote on both devices and allow local-network access when prompted. Keep the receiving computer awake, the app running, and the printer ready.
Android, iPhone, and iPad send jobs. Mac and Windows can send and receive jobs. On a desktop computer, choose This Device to use the same preparation and printing flow locally without pairing.
2. Pair with the Receiving Computer
- On the sending device, open Print and find the receiving computer under Nearby devices.
- Select the computer and request pairing.
- Approve the pairing request on the receiving computer.
- On the receiving computer, open Devices, select the paired sending device, and check its Print and Save PDF permissions.
The permissions are separate and belong to the receiving computer. Enable Print to allow printer submissions and Save PDF to allow the prepared PDF to be returned to the sender. Pair only devices you trust. If the computer does not appear, use Devices → Add → Look up IP address to find it by its local IP address.
3. Add Your Sources
- On the sending device, open Print and choose Add.
- Choose Files for PDFs, supported images, or documents; Images for photos from the mobile photo library; URL for an HTTP or HTTPS web page or direct file link; or Text to type or paste text.
- Arrange the sources in the order you want. Switch between list and grid views, remove unwanted items, or clear the selection to start again.
- Select the receiving computer. The app transfers the selected sources and the computer prepares their pages.
PDFs, supported images, and typed or pasted text need no Office software. DOC/DOCX, XLS/XLSX, and PPT/PPTX require compatible Microsoft Office or LibreOffice software installed separately on the receiving computer. ODT, ODS, ODP, and RTF require LibreOffice. Choose Office document converter in desktop Settings, or export your document to PDF first. Password-protected PDFs are not supported.
Files or photos stored in the cloud may need to download through your operating system or provider first. A URL is opened by the receiving computer and must be accessible there; do not assume that it has the browser login from your phone. Windows web conversion requires Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. To prepare a local or private web address, enable Allow local and private URLs in Settings on the receiving computer.
4. Review and Choose Pages
- Wait for preparation to finish. Pages from all successfully prepared sources appear together in one sequence.
- Open a larger page preview to inspect its content. Select the pages you need, use Select all or Invert selection, and rearrange the page order as needed.
- Review any source preparation errors. Use Retry where offered, or continue with the available pages after checking that the selection contains everything you need.
A selection can contain up to 100 source items, with a maximum of 100 MiB per file and 500 MiB in total. Typed or pasted text is limited to 1 MiB of UTF-8 data per item, and a URL to 4,096 characters. A job can prepare up to 999 pages. Split larger jobs into smaller selections.
5. Choose Settings and Print
- Under Printer, select a printer installed on the receiving computer.
- Review copies, paper, color, duplex, orientation, scaling, and collation. Available choices depend on the selected printer and driver.
- Optionally choose a Header and Footer: source name, page number, date, or date and time.
- Select Print to submit the selected pages as one final PDF to the receiving computer's printing service.
Headers and footers apply to both Print and Save PDF. They reduce the page content slightly to make room, including with Actual size, and keep any headers and footers already in the source. For labels or other work that needs exact dimensions, check scaling and leave added headers and footers set to None when appropriate.
Sent to printer or Printed means the computer accepted the printer submission; Print Remote does not track physical completion. Check the receiving computer's print queue and the printer for paper, ink, offline status, or driver errors. If the result is Unknown, check the queue before submitting again to avoid duplicate copies.
6. Save a PDF Instead
Use Save PDF in the page selector to combine the selected pages, in their chosen order, into one PDF. For a remote job, the receiving computer returns the PDF to the device you are using. On Mac and Windows, choose where to save it. On Android and iOS, use the system share sheet to save or share it. A physical printer is not required for this action, but a Mac or Windows computer is still needed to prepare the pages.
Save PDF is separate from selecting a PDF printer under Printer. If a supported PDF printer offers an Output file field, that file is written into Documents on the receiving computer. Use Save PDF when you want the PDF returned to your sending device.
7. Find and Reuse Previous Jobs
With Save to history enabled, History records sent, received, and local Print and Save PDF actions. Filter by device, open Details, or choose Repeat to restore available sources to the Print tab for review. Repeat does not immediately print another copy and does not guarantee the same page selection or printer settings.
Open PDF is available when a saved or retained PDF is still accessible. On the receiving computer, Keep received PDFs can retain the final PDF in History when history recording is enabled. This keeps the output PDF rather than the original incoming sources. Retained PDFs use limited local storage and older copies may be removed as space is needed. Keep important PDFs in your own files.
Keep original sources available if you want to restore them later. Received entries can be repeated from an available retained PDF. You can delete individual history entries, clear history, or disable recording in Settings. Deleting an entry removes its app-retained PDF but leaves original sources and PDFs you saved separately.
Quick Troubleshooting
- The computer does not appear: Check that both devices are on the same local network, Print Remote is running, and local-network access is allowed. Firewalls, VPNs, guest networks, and router isolation can block communication. Try looking up the computer by local IP address.
- A printer is missing: Install it on the receiving computer and check that printing works there. The app lists that computer's printers. A USB connection is enough; the printer itself does not need Wi-Fi.
- Print or Save PDF is unavailable: Check the paired sender's corresponding permission in Devices on the receiving computer. Wait for preparation to finish and select at least one page; Print also requires a selected printer.
- A document cannot be prepared: Check its format, file access, size, and converter availability on the receiver. Install a compatible converter or export the document to PDF. RTF and OpenDocument files require LibreOffice.
- A URL fails: Check access from the receiving computer. Sites that require a login or complex interactive content may not convert as expected. Local or private destinations need Allow local and private URLs on the receiver. Check WebView2 Runtime on Windows.
- A photo or History source is missing: Download cloud-backed content, restore access, or select the source again. Temporary imported files and retained PDFs may no longer be available.
- The app says Printed but nothing comes out: Check the print queue, printer connection, paper, ink, and driver on the receiving computer. Physical printing happens outside Print Remote.
